John Cassaday to step down as CEO of Corus in March

Corus Entertainment Inc. president and chief executive John Cassaday is retiring from the company next spring after 15 years at the helm, to be succeeded by current chief operating officer Doug Murphy, the Globe and Mail reports.
Cassaday’s departure on March 30 will mark his 25th anniversary in broadcasting, but not the end of his career. “I still have a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” the 61-year-old executive said , pledging to look for new challenges to occupy him for the next “five to seven years.”
Cassaday succeeded Murray Chercover as president of CTV and was ousted when CFTO took over the network. He took CTV from a cooperative to a corporation.

CBC denies that Amanda Lang tried to ‘sabotage’ story about RBC, foreign workers

The National Post says that the editor-in-chief of CBC News said two reports of ethical breaches on the part of senior business correspondent Amanda Lang “made false assumptions and left out important facts.”
The first report published Monday morning by Canadaland’s Sean Craig alleged that Lang attempted to “sabotage” a story produced by investigative reporter Kathy Tomlinson about the Royal Bank of Canada’s plans to replace Canadian employees with foreign workers.
The report alleges that Lang “lobbied aggressively” for the CBC to tone down their coverage of the scandal, including during a conference call that involved Tomlinson. Lang, according to Canadaland, has spoken at events sponsored by RBC at least six times. RBC spokesperson Rina Cortese confirmed with Postmedia that Lang has spoken at “a very limited number of RBC-sponsored events in the past” but “the only other professional relationship we have with Amanda is the same as with other journalists.”
The Canadaland report said Lang’s attempts to suppress the story were initially successful, with an item on World at Six about RBC dropped “without explanation.” CBC News editor-in-chief Jennifer McGuire said this is not the case.

“We did not kill a story on the World at Six on Monday, April 8, 2013 as Mr. Craig implies in his blog,” said McGuire in an emailed statement.

BBC to revise its restrictions on depicting Mohammed

The Spectator reports that the BBC program Question Time saw long-time host David Dimbleby chair a debate on freedom of expression following the Charlie Hebdo shootings. During the program, Dimbleby stated that the BBC’s policy with regards to representations of Mohammed was to not depict the Prophet in any shape or form. This policy was met with criticism from panel and audience members alike.

Global TV anchor Leslie Roberts suspended; owns part of a PR firm

The Star's Kevin Donovan reports that Global TV's news anchor Leslie Roberts has been suspended after a Star investigation found he has secretly been the part owner of a small public relations firm whose clients — lawyers, small businesses and others — appear on his show.
“This information was just brought to our attention by Leslie Roberts,” said Global News spokesman Rishma Govani in an email to the Star Thursday. “At Global News we take matters of journalistic integrity very seriously. Mr. Roberts has been suspended from his duties indefinitely as we conduct a full investigation into this matter.”
