While the female appointments at CTV and Global were roundly pronounced as “firsts” in Canada, Quebec's francophone networks have led the way for years.
Veteran journalist Céline Galipeau is the face of the nightly Le Téléjournal on Radio-Canada, the CBC’s French-language sibling. And Sophie Thibault anchors the flagship 10 p.m. newscast on TVA, the main private, francophone network. Four out of five anchors at the main broadcasters in Canada are, or soon will be, women. As well, it’s two out of three in the U.S. (Katie Couric at CBS, and Diane Sawyer, who recently took over at ABC.)
