Postmedia Network Inc., the company that now owns the National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Vancouver Sun and eight other daily newspapers, said it plans to take a close look at its union contracts in western Canada, among other things. Postmedia president and chief executive officer Paul Godfrey said he held a seven-hour meeting in Toronto with the members of his new executive team on Tuesday and challenged them to come up with their vision for the company within the next 30 days.
Aside from repeating that the newspaper publisher plans to be a “digital-first” company, Godfrey provided few new details.
“We’re examining a number of options. My goal is to meet every one of the promises we’ve said we would do,” he said. “A lot of these things have union implications. We’ve got to find out where and how soon we can do some of these things. Our plan is over the next year to try and implement everything we talked about. That’s why we’ve hit the road running.”
Godfrey repeated that his goal is to take the new company public before the end of the year.
