The CRTC has decided to hold back on requiring English-language television broadcasters to spend as much on Canadian programming as they do on foreign shows. The requirement has been put off for at least a year. The regulator also agreed to hold hearings in the fall that would explore remuneration for signals currently carried by cable and satellite companies for free.
Meanwhile, it will grant one-year licence renewals to four major broadcasters -- CTVglobemedia, Canwest Global Communications, the City-TV stations operated by Rogers Communications and Sun-TV, which is owned by Quebecor Inc.
