Media fight ban on naming social workers

Next week will see a judicial decision as to whether there will be a publication ban on the names of social workers involved in the care of Phoenix Sinclair of Winnipeg. She was five years old when she was murdered in 2005. The media has banded together to fight a proposed ban. A lawyer for local outlets says it would allow "an unaccountable group of anonymous civil servants" to avoid scrutiny. But child welfare agencies and the social workers union are asking for a ban on the identities of workers who are to testify at the scheduled  public inquiry into the death of Phoenix  CBC.ca
